- Nation of Islam
- The Nation of Islam is an American black Muslim anti-integrationist and black supremacist organization with origins in the 1960s civil rights movement. Well-known adherents have included Malcolm X and Muhammed Ali. Founding texts from the 1930s are W.D.Fard’s The Secret Rituals of the Nation of Islam and Teaching For the Lost Found Nation of Islam in a Mathematical Way. Fard rejected white culture and Christianity, maintaining that American blacks should turn to Africa and Asia for comradeship and religion. Its British wing was established in 1995 and may have as many as 2,500 members. The Nation’s leader in Britain is Michael Muhammad, while Leo X Chester and Wayne X run two of the organization’s mosques; they also have two black-only schools which teach the Koran and African history, while a shop on Harlesden High Street called ‘Respect for Life’ sells Nation of Islam products.See also: Islam; Muslim ParliamentPETER CHILDS
